The present is only pain, and the future is also only pain. Two thoughts that often precede suicide. Experientially, the former may be true. The latter, however, is almost certainly false.
The fact that the future will not feel like the present should not be the only thing that keeps you from committing suicide. It is, however, a damn good reason.
Because there is a version of you, a future you (one who at this future moment is riding in a hover car, maybe), trying to remember what it felt like to be as depressed as you feel today, and they can’t. They’re trying to remember what it felt like to be as hopeless as you feel in this very moment, and they find they’re unable to.
And they’re going to think, for just a moment, how thankful they are that you persevered through this dark time in your life.
I appreciate this post! Thanks for writing what you do and how you do.
I’m familiar with both of these versions. May you always lean into the thought of future you riding in a hover car.
